1. The Holy Scriptures
The Holy Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given
by
inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as they were moved by
the Holy
Spirit. In this Word, God has committed to man the knowledge necessary for
salvation. The
Holy Scriptures are the infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard
of character,
the test of experience, the authoritative revealer of doctrines, and the
trustworthy record of
God’s acts in history.
The sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments make up the Holy
Scriptures. God has given us the Bible to reveal His will and to point us to
salvation. Scripture is:
The source of the knowledge essential for salvation. 2 Timothy 3:16=17
The revealer of right doctrine and God’s will. John 17:17; Isaiah 8:20
The record of God’s dealings with mankind. 1 Corinthians 10:11
All Scripture is Christ-centered. John 5:39-40
Texts for furt her study: Psalm 119:81-136; Hebrews 4:12
The Bible is God’s inspired and infallible message to humanity and must be
studied with His guidance. We must not add to or subtract from it.
The Scriptures bear God’s authority, not man’s. 2 Peter 1:20-21
Human beings need the Holy Spirit’s guidance to understand God as He is
revealed in Scripture. 1 Corinthians 2:9-14
We should study all parts of the Bible to find truth. Luke 24:2 7, 44
Daily Bible study is important to keep us from deception. Acts 17:11
Textsforfurther study: Proverbs 30:5-6; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; Revelation
22:18-19
Personal Application
Because God, the greatest Being in the universe, has taken time to reveal
Himself
to me, how much time each day should I commit to prayerful study of His
Word?
How should I react when I discover in Bible study that I need to make some
changes in my life in order to come into harmony with God’s will?
Which of my friends, family members, and neighbors would be helped by
discovering that God has revealed Himself and His plans in the Bible?
It is good to know that God has not just left me to drift aimlessly through
life
without any guidelines. Because I have the Bible to read, I can come to know
God as a friend and helper, and can search out His wisdom and His will for
my life.
Conunitment
Thank You, God, for revealing Yourself and Your will in the Bible. I will search
its pages for truth, and, by Your grace, live my life in harmony with its
teachings.
The Father, Jesus as God, Creation and the Trinity - John 1
2. The Trinity
There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal
Persons. God is
immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite
and beyond
human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy
of worship,
adoration, and service by the whole creation.
There is only one God, yet we know Him as three Persons who are revealed
in Scripture as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Bible makes no
attempt to resolve the riddle of the Trinity, the three in one.
~ The Lord is one God. Deuteronomy 6:4
~ All three Persons were involved in Creation. Genesis 1:1-2;John 1:1, 14
~ All three Persons were evident atJesus’ baptism. Matthew 3:16-17

Personal Application
~ Is it possible that one of the reasons God reveals Himself as three Persons is
to
help us understand His greatness?
~ Is my worship of God more beneficial to God or to me?
V While I may not be able to fully comprehend God’s greatness, or how one God
can be three Persons, I can worship Him for making Himself known to me. I
rejoice in the knowledge that God fully knows and cares about me.
Commitment
~ God, because I have come to realize how very great You are and yet You care
about me, I will gladly worship and serve You. With the Holy Spirit guiding me,
I will seek to know You better and to help others know You too.

creation. He is
just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to angei and abounding in steadfast
love and
faithfulness. The qualities and powers exhibited in the Son and the Holy Spirit

as a Father rather than just as a remote Creator?
~ Since God considers me His child, how should I treat His other children—my

the world is
judged. Forever truly God, He became also truly man,Jesus the Christ. He was
conceived of
the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived and experienced temptation
as a human
being, but perfectly exemplified the righteousness and love of God. By His
miracles He
manifested God’s power and was attested as God’s promised Messiah. He suffered
and died
voluntarily on the cross for our sins and in our place, was raised from the
dead, and ascended
to minister in the heavenly sanctuary in our behalf. He will come again in glory
for the final
deliverance of His people and the restoration of all things.

14. Baptism
By baptism we confess our faith in the death and resurrection ofJesus Christ,
and testify of
our death to sin and of our purpose to walk in newness of life. Thus we
acknowledge Christ
as Lord and Saviour, become His people, and are received as members by His
church. Baptism
is a symbol of our union with Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, and our
reception of the
Holy Spirit. It is by immersion in water and is contingent on an affirmation of
faith in Jesus
and evidence of repentance of sin. It follows instruction in the Holy Scriptures
and acceptance
of their teachings.

God Love for sinners - John 4
Great Controversy and Jesus as Judge - John 9
8. The Great Controversy
All humanity is now involved in a great controversy between Christ and Satan
regarding the
character of God, His law, and His sovereignty over the universe. This conflict
originated in
heaven when a created being, endowed with freedom of choice, in self-exaltation
became
Satan, God’s adversary, and led into rebellion a portion of the angels. He
introduced the
spirit of rebellion into this world when he led Adam and Eve into sin. This
human sin resulted
in the distortion of the image of God in humanity, the disordering of the
created world, and
its eventual devastation at the time of the worldwide flood. Observed by the
whole creatinn,
this world became the arena of the universal conflict, out of which the God of
love will
ultimately be vindicated. To assist His people in this controversy, Christ sends
the Holy Spirit
and the loyal angels to guide, protect, and sustain them in the way of
salvation.
The root cause of all the evil we see on earth today is Lucifer’s (Satan’s)
rebeffion against God, which has led to a universe-wide conflict.
~ The conflict began in heaven. Revelation 12:4-9
~ Satan was created perfect. Ezekiel 28:12-18
~ Satan’s pride led him to want to be equal to God. Isaiah 14:12-14
When he was cast out of heaven, Satan came to earth and tempted Adam and
Eve to join his rebellion. Their fall changed earth from a paradise to a
battlefield. All the inhabitants of the universe have witnessed the results of
Satan’s work here.
Ii When Adam and Eve followed Satan in rebellion, all of mankind became tainted
by sin. Genesis 3; Romans 5:12-14
~ Sin has distorted the image of God in mankind. Romans 1:19-32
~ Sin caused God’s beautiful creation to become so vile that He had to
destroy it
in a flood. Genesis 6-8; 2 Peter 3:6
~ All of creation watches events here, waiting for the final redemption of
God’s
children. Romans 8:19-22; Ephesians 3:8-10: 1 Corinthians 4:9
Li God sends His Son, His Spirit, and His angels to help us in our struggles
against
evil. Romans 5:15-21, 8:26-27; Hebrews 1:14
In the end, all the universe will see that God’s way is right and Satan’s way
wrong, and God will be vindicated as the only just ruler for the universe.
Li Every knee will finally bow to Christ. Philippians 2:5-11
Li All will acknowledge Christ as worthy of worship. Revelation 5:11-14
Personal Application

anyone
in the universe will want to rebel against Him after God puts an end to sin
here?
~ Who has suffered the most from sin’s effects, God or humanity?
~ Understanding that all evil is the result of Satan’s rebellion helps me to
“see
behind the scenes” and understand that the evil I see in the world today is
temporary, it is not God’s fault.
Commitment
Li I recognize the great battle going on between You and Satan. I choose Your
side
and appeal to You for help in my personal battle against evil.
Life Death and Resurrection of Jesus - John 6,18,19
9. The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Christ
In Christ’s life of perfect obedience to God’s will, His suffering, death, and
resurrection, God
provided the oniy means of atonement for human sin, so that those who by faith
accept this
atonement may have eternal life, and the whole creation may better understand
the infinite
and holy love of the Creator. This perfect atonement vindicates the
righteousness of God’s
law and the graciousness of His character; for it both condemns our sin and
provides for our
forgiveness. By dying, Christ took our place, canceled our guilt, reconciled us
to God, and
transforms us. The resurrection of Christ proclaims God’s triumph over the
forces of evil,
and for those who accept the atonement assures their final victory over sin and
death. It
declares the Lordship of Jesus Christ, before whom every knee in heaven and on
earth will
bow.
Christ’s life, death, and resurrection reveal God’s righteous character and
make eternal life available to all who accept it.

19.The Sabbath
The beneficent Creator, after the six days of Creation, rested on the seventh

worship, and ministry in harmony with the teaching and practice ofJesus, the
Lord of the

to follow Jesus’ example by worshiping and doing good on it.
Salvation - John 8
10. The Experience of Salvation
In infinite love and mercy God made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin for us,
so that in Him
we might be made the righteousness of God. Led by the Holy Spirit we sense our
need,
acknowledge our sinfulness, repent of our transgressions, and exercise faith in
Jesus as Lord
and Christ, as Substitute and Example. This faith which receives salvation comes
through the
divine power of the Word and is the gift of God’s grace. Through Christ we are
justified,
adopted as God’s sons and daughters, and delivered from the lordship of sin.
Through the
Spirit we are born again and sanctified; the Spirit renews our minds, writes
God’s law of love
in our hearts, and we are given the power to live a holy life. Abiding in Him we
become
partakers of the divine nature and have the assurance of salvation now and in
the judgment.
All human beings need to be saved. We are sinful by nature and need to
admit and repent of our sins, and receive Christ as our sinless Substitute.

Personal Application
~ Why is the Christian life called a new life?
~ Why is it impossible to live a holy life without God’s power?
Commitment
D I recognize that by nature I am alienated from You, God. It is only because
You
have provided a Saviour that I can receive eternal life. By faith I accept Your
forgiveness, cleansing, and deliverance from sin. I accept Your gracious offer
of
adopting me into Your family and Your power for living a holy life. Father, I
look forward to spending eternity with You.
The Church and Unity is Christ- John 10
11.The Church
The church is the community of believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and
Saviour. In
continuity with the people of God in Old Testament times, we are called out from
the world;
and we join together for worship, for fellowship, for instruction in the Word,
for the celebration
of the Lord’s Supper, for service to all mankind, and for the worldwide
proclamation of the
gospel. The church derives its authority from Christ, who is the incarnate Word,
and from
the Scriptures, which are the written Word. The church is God’s family; adopted
by Him as
children, its members live on the basis of the new covenant. The church is the
body of Christ,
a community of faith of which Christ Himself is the Head. The church is the
bride for whom
Christ died that He might sanctify and cleanse her. At His return in triumph, He
will present
her to Himself a glorious church, the faithful of all the ages, the purchase of
His blood, not
having spot or wrinkle, but holy and without blemish.
When we become Christians, we become a part of Christ’s church. The church
is described as Christ’s body, and He is the head. Church members need to
keep in close contact with Christ and with each other through meeting regularly
for worship.
The church is Christ’s body. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
Christ is the head. Ephesians 1:22-23
The church is also described as Christ’s bride which He is preparing for the
great marriage in heaven. 2 Corinthians 11:2; Revelation 19:7-8
Acceptance of Christ brings adoption into the family of God. John 1:12-13;
Ephesians 2:19-22
Acceptance of Christ leads to separation from worldly practices. 1 John 2:15;
2 Corinthians 6:16-18
God had a special congregation in Old Testament times too. Genesis 12:3;
Acts 7:38
Christians need to meet together for worship and encouragement.
Hebrews 10:24-25
We should invest our gifts, energies, and abilities in building up the church.
1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Ephesians 4:11-15
Texts for furt her study: Ephesians 3:8-11, 5:23-27; Colossians 1:17-18
Christ has given His church authority and a mission on the earth. Its
authority
is founded upon Himself as the Word of God, and upon His word, the Bible.
In answer to the members’ prayers, Christ gives His church the ability to make
decisions in harmony with His will. Matthew 16:13-20, 18:18
My mission as a church member is to lead others from the world into Christ’s
church. Matthew 28:19-20
Personal Application
What part did the church have in helping me come to know Christ as my Saviour?
Why is fellowship with other believers important?
Commitment
Father, with joy I confess thatJesus Christ is my Saviour, and I rejoice that
You
have adopted me into the family of God. I want to unite with Your body on
earth, be part of the family, share Your grace and church fellowship with
others.
13. Unity in the Body of Christ
The church is one body with many members, called from every nation, kindred,
tongue,
and people. In Christ we are a new creation; distinctions of race, culture,
learning, and
nationality, and differences between high and low, rich and poor, male and
female, must
not be divisive among us. We are all equal in Christ, who by one Spirit has
bonded us into
one fellowship with Him and with one another; we are to serve and be served
without partiality
or reservation. Through the revelation of Jesus Christ in the Scriptures we
share the same
faith and hope, and reach Out in one witness to all. This unity has its source
in the oneness
of the triune God, who has adopted us as His children.
One of God’s gifts to His church is unity.
~ Just as the Father, Son, and Spirit are one, SO should the members of the
church
be united. John 17:20-23
Li As God’s children we are a united family. Ephesians 4:1-6
Texts for furt her study: Ephesians 4:14.16; Colossians 3:10-15
Despite their widely varied backgrounds, Christians are a new creation and
are united in full equality in Christ.
EJ No matter what we were like before we accepted Christ, we become part of one
body in Him. Romans 12:4-5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14
~ There are no class distinctions in God’s sight. 2 Corinthians 5:16-17;
Acts 17:26-27
~ In Christ all class distinctions dissolve and we become one people; joint
heirs
of God’s promises to Abraham. Galatians 3:27-29
~ Love toward one another should characterize the members of Christ’s body.
John 13:34-35; lJohn 3:14
Texts for furt her study: Matthew 28:19-20; Psalm 133:1
Personal Application
~ How can I contribute to the unity of my church? (See Ephesians 4:1-3)
~ Is it possible to maintain friendship with Christ while treating one of His
children
as an enemy? (See Matthew 5:44)
V It is a privilege to be a part of the family of God. Wherever I go in the
world, I
can meet with brothers and sisters who will love me and treat me as one with
them in Christ.
Commitment
tJ Because I am grateful for Your work in recreating me as Your child, I will
treat
others as my brothers and sisters in Christ. I will seek Your help, Holy Spirit,
to
maintain peace, unity, and love in the church and wherever I am.
Death and Resurrection - John 11,20
25. Death and Resurrection
The wages of sin is death. But God, who alone is immortal, will grant eternal
life to His
redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state for all people. When
Christ, who is
our life, appears, the resurrected righteous and the living righteous will be
glorified and
caught up to meet their Lord. The second resurrection, the resurrection of the
unrighteous,
will take place a thousand years later.
No human being is immortal. We all would suffer eternal death if God did
not grant forgiveness and eternal life to those who seek to abide in Christ.
~ Only God is immortal. 1 Timothy 6:15-16
~ The wages of sin is death, but God’s gift is life. Romans 6:23
~ Apart from Christ all would die eternally. John 15:6
All who die on this earth enter an unconscious state which the Bible calls
sleep. The righteous dead will be resurrected at Christ’s second coming. They,
along with the living righteous, will join Christ in the clouds. The wicked
dead will be resurrected after the millennium.
~ The death we witness on earth is a temporary sleep. Ecclesiastes 9:5-6;
Psalm
146:3-4; John 11:11-14; Revelation 14:13
~ Because the dead are asleep, they cannot return to communicate with us. God
warns us against efforts to make contact with them. Leviticus 20:6, 27;
Deuteronomy 18:9-12
~ Attempts to contact the dead may lead to deception by evil spirits.
Leviticus 19:31; Isaiah 8:19-20; Revelation 16:14
~ The righteous dead will be resurrected atJesus’ second coming.
1 Corinthians 15:51-54; Colossians 3:4
~ The living righteous will also join Christ then. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17
~ The unrighteous will rise in a separate resurrection. John 5:28-29
~ There will be a thousand years between these two general resurrections.
Revelation 20:1-10
Personal Application
~ Why does sin cause death?
~ Why are there two resurrections?
~ Why do we sleep in death instead of going immediately to heaven or hell?
~/ i need not fear death if I abide in Christ. I am confident that He will
come
again to raise me to eternal life.
Commitment
~ Father, it is comforting to know that death is an unconscious sleep from which
Jesus will awaken those who trusted in Him in this life. I plan to join Jesus in
the
clouds whether or not I live to see Him come.
The Remnant and Its Mission - John 21
12. The Remnant and Its Mission
The universal church is composed of all who truly believe in Christ, but in the
last days, a
time of widespread apostasy, a remnant has been called out to keep the
commandments of
God and the faith of Jesus. This remnant announces the arrival of the judgment
hour,
proclaims salvation through Christ, and heralds the approach of His second
advent. This
proclamation is symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14; it coincides
with the work of
judgment in heaven and results in a work of repentance and reform on earth.
Every believer
is called to have a personal part in this worldwide witness.
In these last days God has a special people called the remnant. They may be
described as those who remain loyal to Him in a time of terrible apostasy.
~ Revelation predicts that the remnant will exist after the persecution of the
dark
ages. Revelation 12:13-17
~ God calls out His special remnant in a time of terrible apostasy.
Revelation 18:1-4
~ The remnant are faithful to God’s commandments. Revelation 12:17, 14:12
EJ The remnant have the testimony ofJesus — the spirit of prophecy — the
prophetic
gift. Revelation 12:17, 19:10
The remnant proclaim an urgent message about the commencement of the
time of judgment, salvation through Christ, and the nearness of His second
coming.
~ They point to salvation through Christ alone. Revelation 12:10-11
They proclaim the message of the judgment hour. Revelation 14:6-12
This message is a reference to the judgment that takes place in heaven before
Christ returns to earth. Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
~ They proclaim the nearness of Christ’s return. 2 Peter 3:10-14
Texts forfurther study:Jude 3, 14; Revelation 12:1-14; 2 Corinthians 5:10
Personal Application
I~ Why does the remnant need especially strong faith?
~u What is the relationship between the faith ofJesus and obedience to God?
~ In what way can the Seventh-day Adventist Church be identified with the
remnant
of the last days?
‘I It is especially challenging to live in these last days, but the challenge
brings
with it the privilege of participating in spreading God’s last day message and
helping people prepare to meetJesus at His second coming.
Commitment
U Father, I want to be a part of Your remnant people in these last days. I am
answering Your call and choose to followJesUs in a life of faith and obedience.
With You guiding me, I will tell others of Your special message for the end
time.
Stewardship - John 12
20. Stewardship
We are God’s stewards, entrusted by Him with time and opportunities, abilities
and possessions,
and the blessings of the earth and its resources. We are responsible to Him for
their proper
use. We acknowledge God’s ownership by faithful service to Him and our fellow
men, and by
returning tithes and giving offerings for the proclamation of His gospel and the
support and
growth of His church. Stewardship is a privilege given to us by God for nurture
in love and
the victory over selfishness and covetousness. The steward rejoices in the
blessings that come
to others as a result of his faithfulness.
In today’s terminology a steward would be called a manager. A steward is a
person who is in charge of another’s possessions. We are God’s stewards
because He has entrusted this world to our care.
U God has placed us in charge of His creation. Genesis 1:26-28, 2:15
U The things we call possessions actually belong to God. 1 Chronicles 29:14
U Even my own body and spirit belong to God because Jesus has purchased my
redemption with His blood. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 1 Peter 1:18-19
True stewardship involves dedicating every aspect of our lives to God. We
are responsible to care for our Master’s property and to be faithful in
returning His portion to Him in tithes (ten percent of our income), in giving
offerings proportional with God’s blessings, in supporting the spread of the
gospel, and in sharing with those in need.
U We should offer ourselves to God as Christ offered up His life for us.
Ephesians 5:2; Romans 12:1-2
U God does not need our gifts, but offers us the privilege of sharing and
learning
to trust Him to provide for us. Psalm 50:12-15
U We must take good care of our Master’s property. Matthew 24:45-5 1
U We are responsible for care of the Lord’s house. Haggai 1:3-11
U Failure to return tithes and offerings is robbing our Lord. Malachi 3:8-12
U We should support the spread of the gospel. 1 Corinthians 9:9-14
U We should be willing to share what God has entrusted to us with those who
are
in need. 2 Corinthians 8:1-15; Romans 15:26-27
U We should give cheerfully, not grudgingly. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
U The real purpose of stewardship is that we may become more like God, whose
very nature it is to give.John 3:16
Personal Application
i~ What is the difference between being a steward and an owner?
~ What is the best way to overcome selfishness?
V Recognizing that I am God’s steward helps me realize how important I am in
the universe. It makes me want to take good care of all He has entrusted to me.
His great gifts to me make me want to become like Him in sharing.
Commitment
U Father, I recognize that You are the Owner of everything in the world, and
that
You made me manager of talents, time, and resources. I want to be Your faithful
steward and give as You have given. I will faithfully return to You tithes and
offerings of what You have placed in my care, and Twill do all I can to aid in
the
spread of the gospel.
I
The Lords Supper John 13
15. The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper is a participation in the emblems of the body and blood of
Jesus as an
expression of faith in Him, our Lord and Saviour. In this experience of
communion Christ is
present to meet and strengthen His people. As we partake, we joyfully proclaim
the Lord’s
death until He comes again. Preparation for the Supper includes
self-examination, repentance,
and confession. The Master ordained the service of footwashing to signify
renewed cleansing,
to express a willingness to serve one another in Christlike humility, and to
unite our hearts in
love. The Communion service is open to all believing Christians.
Jesus instituted the Communion service as a special time for remembering
His death for us and for partaking of His presence in a special way.
~ Jesus instituted the Communion service at the Last Supper, which He celebrated
with His disciples just before His crucifixion. Matthew 26:17-30
~ The bread and the cup represent the body and blood ofJesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 10:16-17
E~ Partaking of Communion expresses faith in Christ as our Lord and Saviour.
John 6:48-63
Ei Communion is a special remembrance of Christ’s death for our sins and a
proclamation of His soon return. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Before we take Communion, we should make things right with God and our
brothers and sisters in Christ. The footwashing is a symbolic cleansing.
~ Through self-examination, repentance, and confession we should prepare
ourselves for the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:27-30.
~ The Ordinance of Humility, or footwashing, is part of the Communion service;
in itwe follow Christ’s example of humility and service. John 13:1-17
~ Seventh-day Adventists practice open communion and allow Christians of any
denomination to partake of communion with them.
Personal Application
~ Why is it important for me to remember Christ’s death?
~ Why are repentance and confession important before partaking of the symbols
of Christ’s body and blood?
~ Why is humility important in the Christian life?
1/ Jesus instituted the Communion service to remind me of His great sacrifice
for
me. In it He provided a special time for starting over again with the past
forgiven
and my relationships with others healed.
Commitment
~ Father, I am thankful thatJesus has provided a time for regularly recommitting
myself to You and for making things right with You and others. Twill make every
effort to .prepare for and participate in Communion whenever it is offered at
my church.
Spiritual Gifts and The Gift of Prophecy John 16
16. Spiritual Gifts and Ministries
God bestows upon all members of His church in every age spiritual gifts which
each member
is to employ in loving ministry for the common good of the church and of
humanity. Given
by the agency of the Holy Spirit, who apportions to each member as He wills, the
gifts provide
all abilities and ministries needed by the church to fulfill its divinely
ordained functions.
According to the Scriptures, these gifts include such ministries as faith,
healing, prophecy,
proclamation, teaching, administration, reconciliation, compassion, and
self-sacrificing service
and charity for the help and encouragement of people. Some members are called of
God
and endowed by the Spirit for functions recognized by the church in pastoral,
evangelistic,
apostolic, and teaching ministries particularly needed to equip the members for
service, to
build up the church to spiritual maturity, and to foster unity of the faith and
knowledge of
God. When members employ these spiritual gifts as faithful stewards of God’s
varied grace,
the church is protected from the destructive influence of false doctrine, grows
with a growth
that is from God, and is built up in faith and love.
Every member of Christ’s body receives special gifts and abilities from the
Holy Spirit. While these gifts may be widely varied within the body, they all
contribute to unity under Christ the Head.
~ The Holy Spirit is the source of these gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:9-11
~ The Holy Spirit inspires faith, hope, and love in all Christians. 1
Corinthians 13
~ The various gifts are necessary to make the church a complete body.
Romans 12:4-8
~ The gifts glorif~i Christ by bringing greater unity and strength to His
church.
1 Peter 4:10-11
The central purpose of all the gifts is the building up of the church into a
body that can be of service in the world.
~ The Spirit supplies all the gifts necessary for the church’s work, and no gift
is
insignificant. 1 Corinthians 12:20-25; Acts 6:1-7
~ Some gifts are considered greater than others. 1 Corinthians 12:27-31
~ The gifts inspire concern for our world. iTimothy 2:1-3
~ The gifts are to produce maturity and unity in the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:8, 11-16
~ We are responsible to wisely use the gifts God distributes. Matthew 25:14-30
~ The Spirit teaches truth and keeps the church from falling into error.
John 16:13
Personal Application
~ Is there any congregation so small that the Holy Spirit cannot enable it to
fulfill
its mission?
~ How would God feel if I refused to accept and use His gifts?
~ Why are there so many different types of spiritual gifts?
‘/ God has promised to give me gifts of the Spirit, and I am eager to
discover what
He wants me to do in building up and strengthening His body here on earth.
Commitment
~ I believe, Father, that You have given me spiritual gifts which You want me to
use in strengthening Your church. I will seek to discover my gifts and use them
to You glory.
17. The Gift of Prophecy
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying
mark of the remnant
church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen G. White. As the Lord’s
messenger, her
writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for
the church
comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction. They also make clear that the
Bible is the
standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested.
Prophecy is an important gift of the Spirit, which God gives to guide His
church. He has promised to continue to send prophets right down to the end
of time and has especially promised the spirit of prophecy to His remnant.
God sends prophets to tell us of His plans. Amos 3:7
The gift of prophecy will exist until the church reaches full maturity and
unity.
Ephesians 4:11-13
The Spirit brings comfort, guidance, and correction.John 16:7-14
~ There will be prophets in the last days. Joel 2:28-29
God’s remnant has the spirit of prophecy. Revelation 12:17, 19:10
In Bible times not all prophets wrote books of the Bible. Some wrote books or
delivered messages that did not become part of the Bible. 2 Samuel 7:3-11;
Luke 2:36; 1 Chronicles 29:29; 2 Chronicles 9:29
The messages that Ellen G. White received in visions and dreams pass the
biblical tests of confession of Christ, fulfillment, and harmony with Scripture.
They have also borne good fruit for God’s kingdom.
God’s prophets confess thatJesus Christ has come in the flesh. 1 John 4:1-3
Fulfillment is one test of the prophetic gift. Jeremiah 28:9
God’s prophets receive visions and dreams. (This was Ellen White’s experience
also.) Numbers 12:6; Acts 2:14-21
A true prophet does not contradict God’s past revelation through prophets
and through His Son,Jesus. Hebrews 1:1-3; Isaiah 8:20; Luke 24:25-27
A true prophet’s message bears good fruit. Matthew 7:15-20
Texts forfurther study: 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21; 2 Chronicles 20:20
Personal Application
Why would it be important to God to send a prophet in the last days?
How can I know whether a person who claims to be a prophet for God really is
one?
How would people have to respond to a prophet’s message for the message to
bring about unity?
I am thankful that God has shown His continuing concern for His church and
that He sent a special messenger to me, as part of His church, in these last
days.
Commitment
Father, I believe You still want to communicate with Your church through the
gift of prophecy. I will study the writings of Ellen White and seek to
understand
Your message for Your remnant people.
The Law of God - John 15
181 The Law of God
The great principles of God’s law are embodied in the Ten Commandments and
exemplified
in the life of Christ. They express God’s love, will, and purposes concerning
human conduct
and relationships and are binding upon all people in every age. These precepts
are the basis
of God’s covenant with His people and the standard in God’s judgment. Through
the agency
of the Holy Spirit they point out sin and awaken a sense of need for a Saviour.
Salvation is all
of grace and not of works, but its fruitage is obedience to the Commandments.
This obedience
develops Christian character and results in a sense of well-being. It is an
evidence of our love
for the Lord and our concern for our fellow men. The obedience of faith
demonstrates the
power of Christ to transform lives, and therefore strengthens Christian witness.
God’s law is an eternal expression of His love and will. It is the basis both
for
His covenant of salvation with mankind and for the judgment. Christ’s life
demonstrates what perfect obedience to God’s law is.
His law is expressed in the Ten Commandments. Exodus 20:1-17
His law expresses His love and will for people.John 15:12, Romans 13:8-10
His law has not been done away with. Matthew 5:17-20
The law is the basis of God’s old and new covenants. Deuteronomy 28:1-14;
Hebrews 8:8-10
E~ The law is the basis of the judgment. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14; James 2:8-12

cannot be saved by keeping the law, but when we realize that God has given
us salvation, we will respond with thankful obedience.
~ The law points out our sinfulness. Romans 3:20, 7:7
~ When we see our sin, we turn to our Saviour. Romans 7:24-25
i~J We receive salvation through our Saviour, not by our works. Ephesians
2:8-10
~ God writes His law on our hearts, and ~this leads us to cheerful obedience.
Hebrews 8:10
~ Obedience develops Christian character and well-being. Psalm 19:7-14
~ Through obedience we demonstrate God’s power and show our loyalty to Him.
Romans 8:3-4; lJohn 5:3
~ Our obedience is a testimony to the world. 2 Corinthians 3:2-3
Text for furt her study:John 16:7-10; Revelation 14:12
Personal Application
~ What would the world be like if there were no laws?
What light does the life ofJesus shed on God’s law?
Why did God write the Ten Commandments in stone?
‘I God’s law gives me guidelines for my life to direct me away from the pit of
sin.
Even though it points out my sinfulness, it does not discourage me because it
also points me to my Saviour.
Conunitment
~ Father, Your law has brought me to recognize my sinfulness. I accept Your law
as binding today. I see my need of a Saviour to forgive me and empower me to
live obediently. I commit myself to living for Jesus as a testimony to Your love
and power.
Second Coming and New Earth - John 14
24. The Second Coming of Christ
The second coming of Christ is the blessed hope of the church, the grand climax
of the
gospel. The Saviour’s coming will be literal, personal, visible, and worldwide.
When He returns,
the righteous dead will be resurrected, and together with the righteous living
will be glorified
and taken to heaven, but the unrighteous will die. The almost complete
fulfillment of most
lines of prophecy, together with the present condition of the world, indicates
that Christ’s
coming is imminent. The time of that event has not been revealed, and we are
therefore
exhorted to be ready at all times.
Christ will return literally and visibly to reward the righteous and punish
the
wicked.
Jesus promised to return. John 14:1-3
Christians look forward to Christ’s return as the blessed hope. Titus 2:13
Christ will return literally, and all mankind will see Him. Acts 1:9-11;
Revelation 1:7; Matthew 26:63-64
D There will be no secret rapture which only some people know about or
experience. Matthew 24:27; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

coming.
1 Corinthians 15:51-54; 2 Timothy 4:8
~ The unrighteous will die. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; Revelation 14:14.20,
19:11-21
Nearly all of the events that Christ and the prophets said would occur before
the Second Coming have occurred. The present condition of our world gives
further evidence that Christ will return so on. We should be ready at all times
to welcome Him.
~ The prophesied events have occurred. Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21
~ As prophesied, evil has greatly increased. 2 Timothy 3:1-5
Li We cannot know the specific time of Christ’s return. Matthew 24:36
Li We should be prepared at all times for His return. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6;
2 Peter 3:11-14; Matthew 24:44
Personal Application
~ Why does Jesus want to return?
~ How should I react to a modern teacher who claims to be Christ?
~ What does it mean to “watch and be ready”?
~/ Because I trust inJesus and abide in Him daily, I can look forward to His
return
as I would to the return of a long-time friend. The prospect of spending
eternity
with Him fills me with eager anticipation.
Commitment
Li Father, I look forward to the second coming of Christ. Help me to live each
day
in expectation ofJesus’ return. How glorious it will be to live with You for
all
eternity!
I
27~ The New Earth
On the new earth, in which righteousness dwells, God will provide an eternal
home for the
redeemed and a perfect environment for everlasting life, love, joy, and learning
in His
presence. For here God Himself will dwell with His people, and suffering and
death will have
passed away. The great controversy will be ended, and sin will be no more. All
things, animate
and inanimate, will declare that God is love; and He shall reign forever. Amen.
God is planning a wonderful home for His children right here on this earth.
There will be no unrighteousness or problems or unfulfilled needs there for
God Himself will supply everything.

~ There will be no problems there. Isaiah 35, 65:17-25
~ There will be no death, sorrow, or pain. Revelation 21:4-7

Personal Application
~ Why will the whole universe rejoice when sin is eradicated from earth?
Am I looking forward to living eternally with God? If so, why? If not, why not?
V I am glad Jesus is preparing a home for me. I am eagerly looking forward to
living with Him. I do not want to disappoint Him or myself by failing to prepare
to live there.
Christian Behavior - John 17
21. Christian Behavior
We are called to be a godly people who think, feel, and act in harmony with the
principles
of heaven. For the Spirit to recreate in us the character of our Lord we involve
ourselves
only in those things which will produce Christlike purity, health, and joy in
our lives. This
means that our amusement and entertainment should meet the highest standards of
Christian taste and beauty. While recognizing cultural differences, our dress is
to be simple,
modest, and neat, befitting those whose true beauty does not consist of outward
adornment
but in the imperishable ornament of a gentle and quiet spirit. It also means
because our
bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, we are to care for them
intelligently. Along with
adequate exercise and rest, we are to adopt the most healthful diet possible and
abstain
from the unclean foods identified in the Scriptures. Since alcoholic beverages,
tobacco,
and the irresponsible use of drugs and narcotics are harmful to our bodies, we
are to
abstain from them as well. Instead, we are to engage in whatever brings our
thoughts and
bodies into the discipline of Christ, who desires our wholesomeness, joy, and
goodness.
As Christians our conduct in the world should be modeled after Christ.
Our actions should give evidence that we are living for God, not for this
world. Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 7:1
We are God’s ambassadors to the world. 2 Corinthians 5:20
Our lives should be like Christ’s life. 1 John 2:6
Putting away worldly things and living for the Lord will produce good fruit in
our lives. Ephesians 5:1-21
E~ Entertainment and the things we think about should be pure and uplifting.
Philippians 4:8; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 10:5
~ We should set our minds on and seek heavenly, not earthly things.
Colossians 3:1-2; Matthew 6:31-33
We should dress modestly and in simplicity, avoiding display and jewelry.
1 Peter 3:3-4; 1 Timothy 2:9-10
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and should be cared for in a way
that glorifies God and promotes health. We should partake moderately of
that which is good and avoid all that is harmful.
Everything we do should glorif~i God. 1 Corinthians 10:3 1
We should care for our bodies as God’s temple by eating and drinking only
health-promoting foods and participating in healthful activities. (Alcohol,
tobacco, caffeine, and misuse of or trafficking in narcotics or other harmful
drugs and mind-altering chemicals have no place in the Christian life.)
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Self-control is important in Christian living. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
God desires that we be healthy. (Adequate exercise, rest, and a good diet are
important.) 3John 2
~ God never intended for unclean animals to be eaten. Leviticus 11:1-47
The Bible makes many practical applications of the principle of putting
God first in our lives. Consider the questions that follow, look up the texts
listed, and draw your own conclusions about how God wants you to live.

rightly represent You in the world. I will carefully control my habits so that
spiritually, mentally, and physically I will be prepared to fulfill Your goals
for
me. Fill me with Your grace to bring my life into harmony with Christ
Heavenly Sanctuary - John 5
23. Christ’s Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary
There is a sanctuary in heaven, the true tabernacle which the Lord set up and
not man. In it
Christ ministers on our behalf, making available to believers the benefits of
His atoning sacrifice
offered once for all on the cross. He was inaugurated as our great High Priest
and began His
intercessory ministry at the time of His ascension. In 1844, at the end of the
prophetic period
of 2300 days, He entered the second and last phase of His atoning ministry. It
is a work of
investigative judgment which is part of the ultimate disposition of all sin,
typified by the
cleansing of the ancient Hebrew sanctuary on the Day of Atonement. In that
typical service
the sanctuary was cleansed with the blood of animal sacrifices, but the heavenly
things are
purified with the perfect sacrifice of the blood ofjesus. The investigative
judgment reveals to
heavenly intelligences who among the dead are asleep in Christ and therefore, in
Him, are
deemed worthy to have part in the first resurrection. It also makes manifest who
among the
living are abiding in Christ, keeping the commandments of God and the faith
ofJesus, and in
Him, therefore, are ready for translation into His everlasting kingdom. This
judgment
vindicates the justice of God in saving those who believe in Jesus. It declares
that those who
have remained loyal to God shall receive the kingdom. The completion of this
ministry of
Christ will mark the close of human probation before the Second Advent.
At His ascension, Jesus Christ began serving as our High Priest in the
heavenly
sanctuary, a ministry which He continues today.
~ God has a sanctuary in heaven, where Christ now serves as High Priest.
Hebrews 1:3, 8:1-5, 9:23-28; 1 Timothy 2:5
~ Christ is ministering today on our behalf, opening the way for us to receive
the
grace we need. Hebrews 2:16-17, 4:14-16, 9:15-22, 10:19-22
The earthly sanctuary’s two phases of ministry—intercession and judgment—
ifiustrate the two phases of Christ’s ministry in heaven.
~ As our High Priest Christ offers the merits of His own blood for our
purification
and justification. Hebrews 9:11-14
~ The final judgment has three phases: investigative, millennial review, and
executive. Daniel 7:9-14; 1 Corinthians 6:2-3; Revelation 20:4, 11-15
~ According to prophecy, Jesus entered the investigative judgment phase of His
ministry in 1844. Daniel 8:13-14, 9:24-27; Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:6
L~ The investigation reveals who is abiding in Christ and ready to live with Him
eternally. Revelation 20:12, 14:12
~ The investigation clears God of charges of injustice. Rev. 14:6-7, 16:4-7
D The Day of Atonement ritual in the earthly sanctuary foreshadowed the final
judgment and the eradication of sin and Satan. Leviticus 16
E~ At the end of the judgment probation closes and Christ will return to give
the
kingdom to His loyal followers. Daniel 7:9-27; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17;
Revelation
22:11-12
Personal Application
~ Will there be any question about God’s justice at the close of probation?
~/ Knowing that the investigative judgment is now in progress gives me hope that
Christ will return soon to take me to live with Him eternally.
Commitment
EJ Jesus, I believe that You are my High Priest in the investigative judgment
going
on now, and I rely on You to forgive me, transform me, and prepare me for
eternal life.
Marriage - John 2
22. Marriage and the Family
Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed byjesus to be a lifelong
union between
a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the Christian, a marriage
commitment is
to God as well as to the spouse, and should be entered into only between
partners who share
a common faith. Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric
of this
relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence
of the relationship
between Christ and His church. Regarding divorce,Jesus taught that the person
who divorces
a spouse, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery.
Although some
family relationships may fall short of the ideal, marriage partners who fully
commit themselves
to each other in Christ may achieve loving unity through the guidance of the
Spirit and the
nurture of the church. God blesses the family and intends that its members shall
assist each
other toward complete maturity. Parents are to bring up their children to love
and obey the
Lord. By their example and their words they are to teach them that Christ is a
loving
disciplinarian, ever tender and caring, who wants them to become members of His
body, the
family of God. Increasing family closeness is one of the earmarks of the final
gospel message.
God established marriage, and Jesus gave His blessing to it. The relationship
between a man and wife typifies Christ’s love for His church. Marriage is not
intended to be broken by divorce.
God established marriage in Eden. Genesis 2:18-25
Jesus gave His blessing to marriage and reaffirmed it as a lifelong commitment.
John 2:1-11; Matthew 19:3-9
Divorce and remarriage is permissible only in cases of marital unfaithfulness.
Matthew 5:31-32
F~ In planning marriage, we should plan to marry one who shares our religious
convictions. 2 Corinthians 6:14

Personal Application
God placed me in a family to increase my joy in life through fellowship. Even if
I do not have a close family unit, I can rejoice in being part of the family of God.
What part does family worship have in keeping the family centered on Christ?
What is the relationship between learning to obey one’s parents and learning
to obey God?
Commitment
Father, I believe and accept the principles of family as established by You. I
thank You for them and want to live according to Your plan.
Nature of Man - John 4
7. The Nature of Man
Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power and
freedom
to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity of
body, mind,
and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else. When our first
parents
disobeyed God, they denied their dependence upon Him and fell from their high
position
under God. The image of God in them was marred and they became subject to death.
Their
descendants share this fallen nature and its consequences. They are born with
weaknesses
and tendencies to evil. But God in Christ reconciled the world to Himself and by
His Spirit
restores in penitent mortals the image of their Maker. Created for the glory of
God, they are
called to love Him and one another, and to care for their environment.
Human beings are God’s special creation—made in His own image. Like
God we have the power of choice. God wants us to choose to love Him and to
care for our world and its inhabitants.
We are created by God in His image. Genesis 1:26-27
God places the breath of life, or spirit, within us, making us living souls—a
unity of body and spirit. We have no soul that can exist apart from this unity
of
body and spirit. Genesis 2:7
God gives us the power of choice, but we remain dependent on Him.
Acts 17:24-28
God wants us to learn to love as He loves. Matthew 22:35-40
We should take good care of God’s creation. Psalm 8:4-8
Texts forfurther study: lJohn 4:7-8, 11, 20; Genesis 2:15
The image of God in mankind became marred when Adam and Eve sinned in
Eden. We are now born with tendencies toward evil and are subject to sin and
death.
Adam and Eve’s wrong use of the power of choice resulted from trying to be
independent of God. Genesis 3
Because of their sin, all their descendants are subject to death. Romans 5:12-17
~ Our natural inborn tendencies are toward evil. Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 2:3
Although we are born with sinful tendencies, God does not reject us. He sees
what we can become through His grace.
~ Jesus’ life and death reconciles us to God. Romans 5:6-11; 2 Corinthians
5:19-20
~ God gives us His Holy Spirit to restore His image in us. Psalm 51:10-11;
Galatians 5:22-23; Colossians 3:10; John 3:5
Personal Application
How can I learn to love as God loves?
What provision has God made to help me overcome my natural tendencies
toward evil?
~1 am created in God’s image! The potential for growth is limitless! I am
thankful
that He has made His Spirit available to renew His image in me.
Commitment
Because I recognize that I am Your special creation, and am constantly dependent
on You, I seek the renewing power of the Holy Spirit to restore me to Your
image.
Millennium and the End of Sin -John 16
26. The Millennium and the End of Sin
The millennium is the thousand-year reign of Christ with His saints in heaven
between the
first and second resurrections. During this time the wicked dead will be judged;
the earth
will be utterly desolate, without living human inhabitants, but occupied by
Satan and his
angels. At its close Christ with His saints and the Holy City will descend from
heaven to earth.
The unrighteous dead will then be resurrected, and with Satan and his angels
will surround
the city; but fire from God will consume them and cleanse the earth. The
universe will thus
be freed of sin and sinners forever.
The 1,000 years begins with the general resurrection of the righteous and
extends to the general resurrection of the wicked. During the 1,000 years,
the righteous will live with Christ and reign in heaven, participating in the
judgment of the wicked dead. Only Satan and his angels will be alive on earth
during the millennium.
~ The millennium is a 1,000-year period when the righteous will reign with
Christ
in heaven. Revelation 20:4
Judging the wicked dead will be part of the work of reigning with Christ.
Revelation 20:6; 1 Corinthians 6:2-3
The millennial period is between the two resurrections. Revelation 20:4-6
~ Satan will be confined to earth during it. Revelation 20:1-3, 7
The earth will be desolate. Revelation 20:1; Jeremiah 4:23-26 (compare with
Genesis 1:2); Revelation 6:14-17, 16:17-21
Mter the millennium Christ and the righteous will return to earth in the Holy
City. The unrighteous will be resurrected at this time and Satan will lead
them in an attack on the City. Finally all sin and sinners will be destroyed.
Christ and the righteous will descend with the Holy City. Revelation 21:1-5
The unrighteous will be resurrected. Revelation 20:5
They will join Satan in a war against the Holy City. Revelation 20:7-10
Satan’s army will be defeated. Revelation 20:9
The executive phase of the judgment will occur. Revelation 20:10-15
Fire will cleanse the earth of all the results of sin. Once the fire has done its
cleansing work, it will go out. 2 Peter 3:10-13; Malachi 4:1
Satan and sin will be destroyed. Ezekiel 28:18-19
Personal Application
Why does God want the righteous to have a part in the judgment of the wicked?
Why must Satan be utterly destroyed?
Do you think anyone will ever challenge God’s authority again after seeing the
results of sin on this earth?
I am glad that God has provided the millennium period for me to spend with
Him in heaven reviewing the cases of those who were lost. It increases my
confidence that He is dealing justly with everyone.
Commitment
Father, grant me the joy of spending the millennium reigning in heaven with
Jesus and those You made righteous!

Commitment
~ Father, I come to You to surrender my life totally into Your care so that I
may
live with You eternally.

Summary
The Son
“God the Eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ. Through Him all things were created, the character of God is revealed, the salvation of humanity is accomplished, and the world is judged. Forever truly God, He became also truly man, Jesus the Christ. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived and experienced temptation as a human being, but perfectly exemplified the righteousness and love of God. By His miracles He manifested God’s power and was attested as God’s promised Messiah. He suffered and died voluntarily on the cross for our sins and in our place, was raised from the dead, and ascended to minister in the heavenly sanctuary in our behalf. He will come again in glory for the final deliverance of His people and the restoration of all things.”
The Trinity
“There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is
immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond
human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship,
adoration, and service by the whole creation.”
Creation
“God is Creator of all things, and has revealed in Scripture the authentic account of His
creative activity. In six days the Lord made “the heaven and the earth” and all living things
upon the earth, and rested on the seventh day of that first week. Thus He established the
Sabbath as a perpetual memorial of His completed creative work. The first man and woman
were made in the image of God as the crowning work of Creation, given dominion over the
world, and charged with the responsibility to care for it. When the world was finished it was
“very good,” declaring the glory of God.
God created all things through the Son, and the Bible gives the authentic
account of His activity during creation week. The Sabbath memorializes His
work and the origin of our world.”
Commitment

save sinners like me.
2. God, because I have come to realize how very great You are and yet You care
about me, I will gladly worship and serve You.

Daniel 9:23-27 (New King James Version)
23 At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision:
Verse 23
"The vision"
Two words for "vision" appear in chapter 8: hazon in verses 1 and 2, referring to the vision of the ram and the he-goat; and mareh in Daniel 8:26, "the vision of the evening and the morning," i.e. the conversation regarding the 2300 days, is the word mareh, while the second word "vision" in that verse, referring to the entire chapter, is hazon.
When Gabriel appeared to Daniel in chapter 9, he said, "I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision." Verses 22, 23. The word "vision" in this verse is mareh, which refers to the portion regarding the 2300 days. Specifically, Gabriel is saying, "Consider the prophecy of the 2300 days."
24 “ Seventy weeks[
a] are determinedVerse 24
Text"Seventy weeks"
Seventy weeks is 490 days. Utilizing the year-day principle commonly used in prophetic time periods, this is actually 490 literal years.
1 prophetic day = 1 literal year
1 prophetic week = 7 literal years
70 prophetic weeks = 490 literal years
This principle is recognized by practically all commentators on this passage.
"Determinined"
A good translation would be, "Seventy weeks are amputated." (See C. Mervyn Maxwell, God Cares I, p. 206; and Jacques Doukhan, "The Seventy-Weeks of Daniel 9: An Exegetical Study" Andrews University Seminary Studies 17, 1979: 1-22.)
This word indicates that the 70 weeks are "cut off" from the longer time period of the 2300 days.
"Upon thy people"
These 490 years were a probationary period for the Jewish nation. God had suffered long with them, sending them prophet after prophet to lead them back to God, but they were bent on going their own way. Their Babylonian captivity had been designed by God to cure them of their idolatry and backsliding.
25 “ Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The street[
Verse 25
"From the going forth"
That is, not the issuing of the decree, but implementation or carrying out of it.
"The commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem"
The designated time period would begin with the going forth of official authorization for the restoration and rebuilding of Jerusalem. That authorization went into effect in the late summer or early autumn of 457 B.C. See Ezra 7

"Messiah the Prince"
Messiah in Hebrew means "anointed one." The Greek word for Messiah is Christos, or "Christ." Daniel 9:25 and 26 are the only verses in the Old Testament where we find the word "Messiah" (KJV). If the Jews ever expected the coming of someone called the "Messiah," it was because of this passage.
The day after Jesus was baptized, Andrew declared to Simon Peter, "We have found the Messias" (John 1:41). He was referring to "how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost" (Acts 10:38). "And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him" (John 1:32).
Thus Christ, the Messiah, appeared at the time of His baptism and anointing by the Holy Ghost.
The purpose of Jesus' anointing."Seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks"
A "score" is twenty. "Threescore" is sixty. So let's add up this period: 7 weeks + 62 weeks = 69 weeks, which is 483 days. Employing the year-day principle, this represents 483 years.
This verse was predicting that from the time of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, until the appearance of the Messiah, there would be 483 years. To check the fulfillment of this prediction, we need to know the year of Jesus' baptism.
Luke 3:1, 2 provides the information necessary for determining the time of John the Baptist's ministry. We need to find a period during which each of the following rulers were in power:
Pontius Pilate as governor of Judea (A.D. 26-36)
Herod (Antipas) as tetrarch of Galilee (4 B.C. - A.D. 39)
Philip as tetrarch of Ituraea (4 B.C. - A.D. 33/34)
Lysanias as tetrarch of Abilene (Exact dates unknown)
Annas as high priest (A.D. 6-14)
Caiaphas as high priest (A.D. 18-36)
This limits it to the years A.D. 26-34. Now we must calculate "the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar" (Luke 3:1).
The sole rule of Tiberius as emperor began when Caesar Augustus died on August 19, A.D. 14. Since Rome was not legally a hereditary monarchy, Tiberius' accession verified the prediction that "he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries." Daniel 11:21.
The method of numbering the years of an emperor's reign differed widely among the various nations which were subject to Rome. Source documents indicate that the non-accession-year system was commonly used in the Near East in the early period of the Roman Empire. In other words, no accession year was counted. As soon as a ruler came to power, his "first" year began, which lasted only until the first New Year's Day. Josephus recorded the reigns of Herod the Great and his sons according to this method.
This means that, according to the most probable Jewish reckoning, Tiberius' first year extended only from August 19 to early October of A.D. 14, at which time the new year began. His fifteenth year, therefore, extended from the fall of A.D. 27 to the fall of A.D. 28.
Luke 3:1 therefore assigns the beginning of John the Baptist's ministry to the fall of A.D. 27. We can now check the accuracy of Daniel 9:25.
457 years in B.C. time, plus 27 years in A.D. time, would seem to make a total of 484 years. But that would be the case only if the transition between B.C. time and A.D. time followed the kind of number lines we studied in math class, as illustrated below:
|
3 |
2 |
1 |
0 |
1 |
2 |
3 |
But when B.C. time switched over to A.D. time, there was no year "zero." 1 B.C was followed immediately by A.D. 1, as the diagram below illustrates:
|
3 B.C. |
2 B.C. |
1 B.C. |
A.D. 1 |
A.D. 2 |
A.D. 3 |
Since there was no year "zero", we must subtract one year from the sum of 484 years which we had gotten by adding 457 B.C. and A.D. 27. That leaves 483 years, exactly 69 prophetic weeks, from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem until the appearance of the Messiah, just as Daniel 9:25 had foretold.
"The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times"
This is evidently the significance of the seven weeks which precede the threescore and two weeks. It appears that the rebuilding of Jerusalem was completed within the first 7 prophetic weeks (49 years) of the period.
26 “ And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
Verse 26
Text"And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself"
Here prophecy slated the death of the Messiah to occur sometime after A.D. 27. Certainly His death was "not for himself." It was for you and me.
"And the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary"
This prince is not "Messiah the Prince" mentioned above, but rather the "king of fierce countenance" mentioned in Daniel 8:23. Keep in mind that the purpose of chapter 9 is to provide a clearer explanation of the vision in chapter 8. So this reference in Daniel 9:26 to "the prince that shall come" should direct our thoughts back to the original prophecy. Daniel 8:23 says that he would "destroy the mighty and the holy people." Here in chapter 9 we are told that he "shall destroy the city and the sanctuary."
This "prince that shall come" is also the "he that cometh against him" in Daniel 11:16 who would "stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed." Thus chapters 8, 9, and 11 all make reference to Rome and its destruction of Jerusalem in the year A.D. 70.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.”
Verse 27
Text"And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week"
"He", a reference to a singular individual, cannot refer to "the people of the prince that shall come", and must be taken as a reference once again to "Messiah the Prince."
This was the 70th, and final, week of the prophecy, and therefore, the last seven years of Israel's probation. It extended from the fall of A.D. 27 to the fall of A.D. 34. Through the ministry of Jesus Himself, and later of His apostles, God presented His final appeal to the Jewish nation to accept the conditions for continuing as His covenant people. But they crucified the Saviour and denounced His followers. When the 70th week ended in A.D. 34, the Jewish leaders had demonstrated, by their stoning of Stephen, their absolute refusal to accept the terms of God's mercy (Acts 7). Henceforth, the nation of Israel would no longer hold the position of being God's chosen people. From that time on, God has shown no national or ethnic favoritism, "but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him." Acts 10:35.
"And in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease"
The mid-point in the seven fall-to-fall years from A.D. 27 to A.D. 34 came in the spring of A.D. 31.
This verse foretold specifically when the Messiah would be cut off. Every animal sacrifice during Old Testament times had pointed forward symbolically to the substitutionary death of Jesus. And when the true "Lamb of God" (John 1:29) offered His unblemished life on the cross of Calvary, type met antitype, shadow surrendered to substance, and the great sacrificial system, which for thousands of years had foretold this very event, completed its purpose and came to its end. "And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom" (Matthew 27:51), denoting that its earthly services had come to an end. It is said that at the very moment Jesus died, the little Passover lamb under the knife of the priest leaped off the altar and escaped. The death of Jesus caused "the sacrifice and the oblation to cease."
Did Jesus die exactly in the midst of the 70th week? The Gospel of John reveals that Jesus' ministry lasted exactly three and a half years. John mentions three Passovers (John 2:13; 6:4; 12:1) and an unnamed feast of the Jews (John 5:1) which is understood to be a Passover. Jesus was baptized several months prior to the first of these Passovers, and He was crucified at the time of the fourth. Thus His ministry lasted three and a half years. The four Passovers may be assigned to the springs of A.D. 28, 29, 30, and 31. Jesus, therefore, was crucified in the spring of A.D. 31, in the very midst of the 70th week of Daniel 9:27.
The last half of verse 27 is another reference to the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, the direct result of her having grieved away the Spirit of God.

Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.Joh 2:24
But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,Joh 2:25
And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.
Summary
“Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the Christian, a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith. Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence of the relationship between Christ and His church. Regarding divorce, Jesus taught that the person who divorces a spouse, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery. Although some family relationships may fall short of the ideal, marriage partners who fully commit themselves to each other in Christ may achieve loving unity through the guidance of the Spirit and the nurture of the church. God blesses the family and intends that its members shall assist each other toward complete maturity. Parents are to bring up their children to love and obey the Lord. By their example and their words they are to teach them that Christ is a loving disciplinarian, ever tender and caring, who wants them to become members of His body, the family of God. Increasing family closeness is one of the earmarks of the final gospel message.”

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:Joh 3:2

He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures, leads it into all truth.”
New birth
Also referred to as a
New Heart. The Action of the Holy Spirit on a willing believer in Christ. New thoughts, new feelings, new motives, are implanted. The mind is changed; the faculties are roused to action in new lines. Man is not endowed with new faculties, but the faculties he has are purified. The conscience is awakened. The selfish spirit is being cleansed from the soul.
Baptism
“By baptism we confess our faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and testify of our death to sin and of our purpose to walk in newness of life. Thus we acknowledge Christ as Lord and Saviour, become His people, and are received as members by His church. Baptism is a symbol of our union with Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, and our reception of the
Holy Spirit. It is by immersion in water and is contingent on an affirmation of faith in Jesus and evidence of repentance of sin. It follows instruction in the Holy Scriptures and acceptance of their teachings.”

Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.Joh 4:51
And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.Joh 4:52
Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.Joh 4:53
So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.Joh 4:54
This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee. What is in Man?
Gen 1:26,27 We are created by God in His image
Acts 17:24-28 - God gives us the power of choice
Gen 3:4-6 - Adam and Eve’s wrong use of power of choice
Rom 5:12-17 - Man subject to death
Ps 51:5 and Eph 2:3 - Man’s natural inborn tendencies are toward evil
Rom 5:6-11 - Rom 5:6-11 Jesus life and death restores us to God
Ps 51:10-11 The Holy Spirit restores man to God’s image
“Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power and freedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity of body, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else. When our first parents disobeyed God, they denied their dependence upon Him and fell from their high position under God. The image of God in them was marred and they became subject to death. Their descendants share this fallen nature and its consequences. They are born with weaknesses and tendencies to evil. But God in Christ reconciled the world to Himself and by His Spirit restores in penitent mortals the image of their Maker. Created for the glory of God, they are called to love Him and one another, and to care for their environment.”
Commitment
Because I recognize that I am Your special creation, and am constantly dependent
on You, I seek the renewing power of the Holy Spirit to restore me to Your
image.
John 5- Millennium, Judgment and the Heavenly Sanctuary
Joh 5:1
After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.Ex 23:14-16 we read; "Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field."
The Passover being the first feast
In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month between the two evenings is the LORD'S Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD; seven days ye shall eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no manner of servile work. And ye shall bring an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days; in the seventh day is a holy convocation; ye shall do no manner of servile work. (
The biblical regulations for the observance of the festival require that all leavening be disposed of before the beginning of the 15th of Nisan. An unblemished lamb or goat is to be set apart on Nisan 10, and slaughtered on Nisan 14 "between the two evenings", a phrase which is, however, not defined. It is then to be eaten "that night", Nisan 15, roasted, without the removal of its internal organs with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Nothing of the sacrifice on which the sun rises may be eaten, but must be burned. The sacrifices may only be performed in Jerusalem.
Some of these details can be corroborated, and to some extent amplified, in extrabiblical sources. The removal (or "sealing up") of the leaven is referred to the Passover Papyrus, an Aramaic papyrus from 5th century BCE Elephantine in Egypt. The Biblical commandments concerning the Passover (and the Feast of Unleavened Bread) stress the importance of remembering:
And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt; and thou shalt observe and do these statutes." (
And this day shall be unto you for a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
Remember this day, in which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, for by strength the hand of the LORD brought you out from this place.
Pentecost is also of significance in the understanding of Chapter 5. Pentecost or the Festival of Wheat harvest is the second of the Jewish festivals. The "first fruits" were dedicated to God just as Christ and the saint he took with Him to heaven were the first fruits of the saved.
Ex. 19 and Ez.1 were traditional read at Pentecost. Ez:1 is like Rev 4 and 5 in that it is vision of the throne of God.
Pentecost means "50" The feast of Weeks was 7weeks =49 day and celebrated the day after on the 50th day.
Jesus was anointed 10 days after His accession to heaven, 50 days after Passover (40 days on earth after resurrection).
In Ps 133 we read "A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how
pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard,
even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion:
for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
On the 50th day after Jesus resurrection (40 day on earth and 10 days in heaven) Jesus was anointed our high priest and the oil (Holy Spirit) following from Christ descended, like the oil running down Aaron's beard, to the disciple as described in Acts 2:1-4 "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
Feast of Trumpets . This festival was celebrated on 1st day of 7th month (see Lev. 23:24).
Joh 5:2
Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.Joh 5:3
In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.Joh 5:4
For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.Joh 5:5
And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.Joh 5:6
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?Joh 5:7
The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.Joh 5:8
Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.Joh 5:9
And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.Joh 5:10
The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.Joh 5:11
He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.Joh 5:12
Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?Joh 5:13
And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.Joh 5:14
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.Joh 5:15
The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.Joh 5:16
And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.Joh 5:17
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.Joh 5:18
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.Joh 5:19
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.Joh 5:20
For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.Joh 5:21
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.Joh 5:22
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:Joh 5:23
That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father which hath sent him.Joh 5:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.Joh 5:25
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.Joh 5:26
For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;Joh 5:27
And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.Joh 5:28
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,Joh 5:29
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. How may resurrections?

But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. When is the first resurrection?

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.Rev 20:15
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. The Millennium and the End of Sin
“The millennium is the thousand-year reign of Christ with His saints in heaven between the first and second resurrections. During this time the wicked dead will be judged; the earth will be utterly desolate, without living human inhabitants, but occupied by Satan and his angels. At its close Christ with His saints and the Holy City will descend from heaven to earth. The unrighteous dead will then be resurrected, and with Satan and his angels will surround the city; but fire from God will consume them and cleanse the earth. The universe will thus be freed of sin and sinners forever.”
Joh 5:30
I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.Joh 5:31
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.Joh 5:32
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.Joh 5:33
Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.Joh 5:34
But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.Joh 5:35
He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.Joh 5:36
But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.Joh 5:37
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.Joh 5:38
And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.Joh 5:39

But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.Joh 5:43
I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.Joh 5:44
How can ye believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only?Joh 5:45
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.Joh 5:46
For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.In what way did Moses or God though Moses teach of Jesus? Sanctuary

Joh 5:47
But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?1. Sacrifice
This step was symbolized in the Old Testament by the daily slaying of animals. A perfect lamb without blemish was required, and sacrificed in the courtyard. Every drop of blood that was shed in those rituals pointed to the sacrifice of Jesus for lost mankind. His death paid the full price for our redemption.
2. Intercession
This step was symbolized by the daily duties performed by the priests in the holy place, or first apartment of the sanctuary. Incense was continually offered before God, mingled with the prayers of the saints. This represented Christ’s priestly intercession for His people which He began after His ascension to heaven. Through Christ’s first apartment ministry the sinner’s guilt is pardoned, and Christ’s righteousness is imparted to His people.
3. Judgment
The third step was illustrated once each year in the Old Testament ceremonies. The tenth day of the seventh month was called the Day of Atonement. It was the day on which the sanctuary was cleansed. It was considered the most solemn and significant event of the year. On that day the whole congregation appeared before the Lord that they might be made "at one" with Him. Sins which had been brought to the sanctuary throughout the year were figuratively removed from it on that day. But those who failed to humble themselves before God were cut off from the people.
On that day the high priest alone appeared before God behind the veil of the Most Holy Place. With him he took the blood of a goat and a censer of coals from the altar of incense. This represented the final phase of Christ’s work in the heavenly sanctuary, performed in "the time of the end." The work of atonement is not complete until the sanctuary is thus cleansed.God has a sanctuary in heaven, where Christ now serves as High Priest. Hebrews 1:3, 8:1-5, 9:23-28
Jesus is ministering today on our behalf, opening the way for us to receive the grace we need. Hebrews 2:16-17, 4:14-16, 9:15-22, 10:19-22
Jesus as our High priest offers the merits of His own blood for our purification and justification. Heb 9:11-14
The final judgment had three phases: investigative, millennial review, and executive. Dan7:9-14, 1 Cor 6:2-3; Rev 20:4,11-15
According to prophecy, Jesus entered the investigative judgment phase of His ministry in 1844. Dan 8:13-14, 9:24-27
The investigation reveals who is abiding in Christ and ready to live with Him for eternity. Rev. 14:6-7, 16:4-7
The investigation clears God of charges of injustice. Rev. 14:6-7, 16:4-7
The Day of Atonement ritual in the earthly sanctuary foreshadowed the final judgment and the eradication of sin and Satan. Leviticus 16
John 6,18,19- Life Death and Resurrection of Jesus
Joh 6:1
After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.Joh 6:2
And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.Joh 6:3
And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.Joh 6:4
And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.Joh 6:5
When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?Joh 6:6
And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.Joh 6:7
Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.Joh 6:8
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,Joh 6:9
There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?Joh 6:10
And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.Joh 6:11
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.Joh 6:12
When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.Joh 6:13
Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.Joh 6:14
Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. Why did Jesus perform this miracle?
Why gather up the fragments?
Joh 6:15
When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. Why did Jesus not let them make him King?
Joh 6:16
And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,Joh 6:17
And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.Joh 6:18
And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.Joh 6:19
So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.Joh 6:20
But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.Joh 6:21
Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.Joh 6:22
The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;Joh 6:23
(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)Joh 6:24
When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.Joh 6:25
And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?Joh 6:26
Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.Joh 6:27
Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.Joh 6:28
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?Joh 6:29
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.Joh 6:30
They said therefore unto him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?Joh 6:31
Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.Joh 6:32
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.Joh 6:33
For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.Joh 6:34
Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.Joh 6:35
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.Joh 6:36
But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.Joh 6:37
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.Joh 6:38
For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.Joh 6:39
And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.Joh 6:40
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.The hope of the Christian is in the resurrection!
Joh 6:41
The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.Joh 6:42
And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?Joh 6:43
Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.Joh 6:44
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.Joh 6:45
It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.Joh 6:46
Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.Joh 6:47
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.Joh 6:48
I am that bread of life.Joh 6:49
Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.Joh 6:50
This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.Joh 6:51
I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.Joh 6:52
The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?Joh 6:53
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.Joh 6:54
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.Joh 6:55
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.Joh 6:56
He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.Joh 6:57
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.Joh 6:58
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live forever. What does it mean to eat Jesus flesh and drink his blood?
Joh 6:59
These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.Joh 6:60
Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?Joh 6:61
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?Joh 6:62
What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?Joh 6:63
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.Contrast the spirit and flesh?
Joh 6:64
But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.Joh 6:65
And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.Joh 6:66
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.Joh 6:67
Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?Joh 6:68
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.Joh 6:69
And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.Joh 6:70
Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?Joh 6:71
He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.John 7- Sabbath
Joh 7:1
After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.Joh 7:2
Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.Joh 7:3
His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.Joh 7:4
For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, show thyself to the world.Joh 7:5
For neither did his brethren believe in him.Joh 7:6
Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is always ready.Joh 7:7
The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.Joh 7:8
Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.Joh 7:9
When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.Joh 7:10
But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.Joh 7:11
Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?Joh 7:12
And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.Joh 7:13
Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.Joh 7:14
Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.Joh 7:15
And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?Joh 7:16
Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.Joh 7:17
If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. Why then are so may in error regarding the doctrines?
John 12:35
Joh 7:18
He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.Joh 7:19
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?Joh 7:20
The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?Joh 7:21
Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.Joh 7:22
Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.Joh 7:23
If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?Joh 7:24
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.D. L. Moody (1837-1899) made the following appeal in regard to the Sabbath:
I honestly believe that this commandment is just as binding today as it ever was. I have talked with men who have said that it has been abrogated, but they have never been able to point to any place in the Bible where God repealed it. When Christ was on earth, He did nothing to set it aside; He freed it from the traces under which the scribes and Pharisees had put it, and gave it its true place. 'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.' It is just as practicable and as necessary for men today as it ever was-in fact, more than ever, because we live in such an intense age.
The Sabbath was binding in Eden, and it has been in force ever since. The fourth commandment begins with the word remember, showing that the Sabbath already existed when God wrote this law on the tables of stone at Sinai. How can men claim that this one commandment has been done away with when they will admit that the other nine are still binding?
I believe that the Sabbath question today is a vital one for the whole country. It is the burning question of the present time. If you give up the Sabbath the church goes; if you give up the church the home goes; and if the home goes the nation goes. That is the direction in which we are traveling.
The church of God is losing its power on account of so many people giving up the Sabbath, and using it to promote selfishness."
Joh 7:25
Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?Joh 7:26
But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?Joh 7:27
Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.Joh 7:28
Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.Joh 7:29
But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.Joh 7:30
Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.Joh 7:31
And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?Joh 7:32
The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.Joh 7:33
Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.Joh 7:34
Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.Joh 7:35
Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?Joh 7:36
What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?Joh 7:37
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.Joh 7:38
He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.Joh 7:39
(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)Joh 7:40
Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.Joh 7:41
Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?Joh 7:42
Hath not the Scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?Joh 7:43
So there was a division among the people because of him.Joh 7:44
And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.Joh 7:45
Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?Joh 7:46
The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.Joh 7:47
Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?Joh 7:48
Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?Joh 7:49
But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.Joh 7:50
Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)Joh 7:51
Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?Joh 7:52
They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.Joh 7:53
And every man went unto his own house.John 8- Salvation
Joh 8:1
Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.Joh 8:2
And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.Joh 8:3
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,Joh 8:4
They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.Joh 8:5
Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?Joh 8:6
This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.Joh 8:7
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.Joh 8:8
And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.Joh 8:9
And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.Joh 8:10
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?Joh 8:11
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.Does Jesus forgive us to continue in sin?
Joh 8:12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. How do we avoid darkness?
Joh 8:13
The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.Joh 8:14
Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.Joh 8:15
Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.Joh 8:16
And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.Joh 8:17
It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.Joh 8:18
I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.Joh 8:19
Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.Joh 8:20
These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.Joh 8:21
Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. How can we not die in our sins?
Joh 8:22
Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.Joh 8:23
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.Joh 8:24
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.Joh 8:25
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.Joh 8:26
I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.Joh 8:27
They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.Joh 8:28
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.Joh 8:29
And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.Did Jesus ever sin?
Joh 8:30
As he spake these words, many believed on him.Joh 8:31
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; Is it once saved always saved?
Joh 8:32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. How does truth make you free?
Joh 8:33
They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?Joh 8:34
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.Joh 8:35
And the servant abideth not in the house forever: but the Son abideth ever.Joh 8:36
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.Joh 8:37
I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.Joh 8:38
I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.Joh 8:39
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.Joh 8:40
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.Joh 8:41
Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.Joh 8:42
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.Joh 8:43
Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.Joh 8:44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.Who is the devil
Joh 8:45
And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.Joh 8:46
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?Joh 8:47
He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.Joh 8:48
Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?Joh 8:49
Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honor my Father, and ye do dishonor me.Joh 8:50
And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.Joh 8:51
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.Joh 8:52
Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.Joh 8:53
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?Joh 8:54
Jesus answered, If I honor myself, my honor is nothing: it is my Father that honoreth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:Joh 8:55
Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.Joh 8:56
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.Joh 8:57
Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?Joh 8:58
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.Joh 8:59
Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.John 9- Great Controversy and Jesus as Judge
Joh 9:1
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.Joh 9:2
And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blindJoh 9:3
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.Joh 9:4
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.Joh 9:5
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.Joh 9:6
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,Joh 9:7
And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.Joh 9:8
The neighbors therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?Joh 9:9
Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.Joh 9:10
Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?Joh 9:11
He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.Joh 9:12
Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.Joh 9:13
They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.Joh 9:14
And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.Joh 9:15
Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.Joh 9:16
Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.Joh 9:17
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.Joh 9:18
But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.Joh 9:19
And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?Joh 9:20
His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:Joh 9:21
But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.Joh 9:22
These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.Joh 9:23
Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.Joh 9:24
Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.Joh 9:25
He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.Joh 9:26
Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?Joh 9:27
He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?Joh 9:28
Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.Joh 9:29
We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.Joh 9:30
The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.Joh 9:31
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshiper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.Joh 9:32
Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.Joh 9:33
If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.Joh 9:34
They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.Joh 9:35
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?Joh 9:36
He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?Joh 9:37
And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.Joh 9:38
And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him.Joh 9:39
And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. What is he saying? Those who know the truth but do not walk in it will soon not believe. But some who have not hear may yet believe and follow.
Joh 9:40
And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also?Joh 9:41
Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.John 10- The Church and Unity is Christ
Joh 10:1
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.Joh 10:2
But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.Joh 10:3
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.Joh 10:4
And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.Joh 10:5
And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.Explain the meaning of Door, Thief, Shepherd, Porter, Voice, Stranger
Joh 10:6
This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.Joh 10:7
Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.Joh 10:8
All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.Joh 10:9
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.Joh 10:10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.Joh 10:11
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.Joh 10:12
But he that is a hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.Joh 10:13
The hireling fleeth, because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.Joh 10:14
I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.Joh 10:15
As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.Joh 10:16
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.Joh 10:17
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.Joh 10:18
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.Joh 10:19
There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.Joh 10:20
And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?Joh 10:21
Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?Joh 10:22
And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.Joh 10:23
And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.Joh 10:24
Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.Joh 10:25
Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.Joh 10:26
But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.Joh 10:27
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:Joh 10:28
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.Joh 10:29
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.Joh 10:30
I and my Father are one.Joh 10:31
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.Joh 10:32
Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?Joh 10:33
The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.Joh 10:34
Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are godsJoh 10:35
If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the Scripture cannot be broken;Joh 10:36
Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?Joh 10:37
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.Joh 10:38
But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.Joh 10:39
Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,Joh 10:40
And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.Joh 10:41
And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.Joh 10:42
And many believed on him there.John 11- Death and Resurrection
Joh 11:1
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.Joh 11:2
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)Joh 11:3
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.Joh 11:4
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.Joh 11:5
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.Joh 11:6
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.Joh 11:7
Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judea again.Joh 11:8
His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?Joh 11:9
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.Joh 11:10
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.Joh 11:11
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.Joh 11:12
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.Joh 11:13
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.Joh 11:14
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.Joh 11:15
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.Why does Jesus refer to death as a sleep? Unconscious Yet the hope of resuming an awake state as the same person.
Joh 11:16
Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.Joh 11:17
Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.Where was he? In heaven?
Joh 11:18
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:Joh 11:19
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.Joh 11:20
Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.Joh 11:21
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Joh 11:22
But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.Joh 11:23
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.Joh 11:24
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.Joh 11:25
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:Are the dead alive in heaven or are they asleep in a unconscious state awaiting the resurrection
Joh 11:26
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? When someone dies in Jesus they are not dead but asleep
Joh 11:27
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.Joh 11:28
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.Joh 11:29
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.Joh 11:30
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.Joh 11:31
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.Joh 11:32
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Joh 11:33
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.Joh 11:34
And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.Joh 11:35
Jesus wept.Joh 11:36
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!Joh 11:37
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?Joh 11:38
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.Joh 11:39
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.Joh 11:40
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?Joh 11:41
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.Joh 11:42
And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.Joh 11:43
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.Joh 11:44
And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.Joh 11:45
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.Joh 11:46
But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.Joh 11:47
Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.Joh 11:48
If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.Joh 11:49
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,Joh 11:50
Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.Joh 11:51
And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;Joh 11:52
And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.Joh 11:53
Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.Joh 11:54
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.Joh 11:55
And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.Joh 11:56
Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?Joh 11:57
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should show it, that they might take him.John 12- Stewardship
Joh 12:1
Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.Joh 12:2
There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.Joh 12:3
Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.Joh 12:4
Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,Joh 12:5
Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?Joh 12:6
This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.Joh 12:7
Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.Joh 12:8

Joh 12:9
Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.Joh 12:10

And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,Joh 12:15
Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.Joh 12:16
These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.Joh 12:17
The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.Joh 12:18
For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.Joh 12:19

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.Joh 12:25
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.Joh 12:26
If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honor.Joh 12:27
Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.Joh 12:28

Therefore they could not believe, because that Isaiah said again,Joh 12:40
He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.Joh 12:41
These things said Isaiah, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.Joh 12:42
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:Joh 12:43
For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.Is it natural to love the praise of men?
Joh 12:44
Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.Joh 12:45
And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.Joh 12:46
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.Joh 12:47
And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.Joh 12:48
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. When is the Judgment?
Joh 12:49
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.Joh 12:50

After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.Joh 13:6

Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.Joh 13:24
Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.Joh 13:25
He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?Joh 13:26
Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.Joh 13:27
And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.Joh 13:28
Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.Joh 13:29
For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.Jesus read the heart, the disciples could see only outward appearance.
Joh 13:30
He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.Joh 13:31

As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Why did they fall backwards to the ground?
Joh 18:7
Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.Joh 18:8
Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:Joh 18:9
That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.Joh 18:10
Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.Joh 18:11
Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?Joh 18:12
Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,Joh 18:13
And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.Annas was the former High priest and older and more experienced.
Joh 18:14
Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.Joh 18:15
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.Joh 18:16
But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.Joh 18:17
Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.It not good to be somewhere pretending not to be a disciple.
Joh 18:18
And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.Joh 18:19
The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.Joh 18:20
Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.Joh 18:21
Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.Joh 18:22
And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?Joh 18:23
Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?Joh 18:24
Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.Joh 18:25
And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.Joh 18:26
One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?Joh 18:27
Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.Joh 18:28
Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. What is the meaning of the Passover?
Joh 18:29
Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?Joh 18:30
They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.Joh 18:31
Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:Joh 18:32
That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.Joh 18:33
Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?Joh 18:34
Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?Why did Jesus say this? An appeal to Pilate to accept him.
Joh 18:35
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?Joh 18:36
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.Joh 18:37
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.Joh 18:38
Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.Is truth important?
Joh 18:39
But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?Joh 18:40
Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.Joh 19:1
Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.Joh 19:2
And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,Joh 19:3
And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.Joh 19:4
Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.Joh 19:5
Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!Pilate showed his weakness by abusing a innocent man and they new if they pressed they would achieve there goals.
Joh 19:6
When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.Joh 19:7
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.Joh 19:8
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;Joh 19:9
And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.Joh 19:10
Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?Joh 19:11
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.Joh 19:12
And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.Joh 19:13
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.Joh 19:14
And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!Joh 19:15
But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.Joh 19:16
Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.Joh 19:17
And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:Joh 19:18
Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.Joh 19:19
And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.Joh 19:20
This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.Joh 19:21
Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The king of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.Joh 19:22
Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.Joh 19:23
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.Joh 19:24
They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.Joh 19:25
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.Joh 19:26
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!Joh 19:27
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.Joh 19:28
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.Joh 19:29
Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.Joh 19:30
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.Joh 19:31
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was a high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.Joh 19:32
Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.Joh 19:33
But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs:Joh 19:34
But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. What is the significant of the blood and water?
Joh 19:35
And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.Joh 19:36
For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.Joh 19:37
And again another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.Joh 19:38
And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.Joh 19:39
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight.Joh 19:40
Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.Joh 19:41
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein was never man yet laid.Joh 19:42
There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulcher was nigh at hand.John 20- Death and Resurrection
Joh 20:1
The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulcher.Joh 20:2
Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him.Joh 20:3
Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher.Joh 20:4
So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter and came first to the sepulcher.Joh 20:5
And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.Joh 20:6
Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, and seeth the linen clothes lie,Joh 20:7
And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.Joh 20:8
Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulcher, and he saw, and believed.Joh 20:9
For as yet they knew not the Scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. What scripture says he must rise again?
Joh 20:10
Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.Joh 20:11
But Mary stood without at the sepulcher weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulcher,Joh 20:12
And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.Joh 20:13
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.Joh 20:14
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.Joh 20:15
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.Joh 20:16
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.Joh 20:17
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.Joh 20:18
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.Joh 20:19
Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.Joh 20:20
And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.Joh 20:21
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. What kind of Peace is he talking about? Peace with God.
Joh 20:22
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:Joh 20:23
Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.Joh 20:24
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.Joh 20:25
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.Joh 20:26
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace, be unto you.Joh 20:27
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.Joh 20:28
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.Joh 20:29
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.Joh 20:30
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:Joh 20:31
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. What is this life Jesus is talking about?
John 21- The Remnant and Its Mission
Joh 21:1
After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise showed he himself.Joh 21:2
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.Joh 21:3
Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately: and that night they caught nothing.Joh 21:4
But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.Joh 21:5
Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.Joh 21:6
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.Joh 21:7
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.Joh 21:8
And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.Joh 21:9
As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.Joh 21:10
Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.Joh 21:11
Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.Joh 21:12
Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.Joh 21:13
Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.Joh 21:14
This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.Joh 21:15
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jona, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.Joh 21:16
He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jona, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.Joh 21:17
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jona, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.Joh 21:18
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.Joh 21:19
This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.Joh 21:20
Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?Joh 21:21
Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?Joh 21:22
Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.Joh 21:23
Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?Joh 21:24
This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.Joh 21:25
And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
