History of the
Sabbath
The Sabbath was instituted
at Creation
"And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he
rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he
had rested from all his work which God created and made." Gen 2:2-3
It was observed by Jesus
Christ
"And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as
his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood
up for to read." Luke 4:16
It was still in effect
after Jesus' death
"And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed
after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath
day according to the commandment." Luke 23:55
" Now when Paul and his
company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John
departing from them returned to Jerusalem.
But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and
went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down."
Acts 13:13+14
"And when the Jews were
gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that
these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious
proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded
them to continue in the grace of God.
And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city
together to hear the word of God.
But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and
spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and
blaspheming.
Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the
word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it
from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn
to the Gentiles." Acts 13:42-46
"And Paul, as his manner was,
went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of
the scriptures." Acts 17:2
"And he reasoned in the synagogue
every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks." Acts 18:4
"But pray ye that your
flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:" Mat
24:20
It will be kept after the
2nd Coming of Christ.
"For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I
will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and
your name remain.
And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one
sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship
before me, saith the LORD." Isa 66:22
